While the zoning process is designed to balance the principles of property rights with the protection of the public interest, it has long been recognized that it is next to impossible to write a set of regulations affecting the development of land that can be universally applied. With that in mind, the State enacted legislation that provides a means for providing relief from certain requirements of the zoning ordinance through a municipality’s Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA.)
The function of the ZBA is to hear and decide appeals of administrative decisions made in implementing the zoning ordinance and to hear and decide requests for variances from the strict terms of the zoning ordinance. The ZBA may also be called upon to interpret provisions of the zoning ordinance.
Members of the ZBA are:
- ______________ (Resident)
- Craig Owens (Resident)
- Rose Ellen Powell (City Council)
- Steven Schmitz (Resident)
- Linda Nead (Resident)
There is one opening available on the ZBA. Please contact Mayor Gerald Hall if interested in serving on this board.

The ZBA meets on an as-needed basis. Please contact the City Clerk at (616) 696-1330 x 103 regarding the status of all ZBA meetings.
